Coming advances in technology will trigger profound changes in how transportation systems function and in the form of the urban development that surrounds them. Growth in electric vehicle usage will create demand for new vehicle-powering support infrastructure and make existing infrastructure obsolete. The advent of autonomous vehicles may increase automobile trip-making and competition with public transit, while reducing parking demand.
